I continued working on my red lips that I started with Laleh Kamalian in her free online workshop that she ran on Tuesday 4th March 2025.
She updated her replay tutorial to include how she went about adding the skin around the lips.
I had never seen the techniques that Laleh uses before and I have to say as I was following along I’m thinking to myself this looks awful. I listened to Laleh and trusted her and the process and I’m amazed at the result.
It did transform in front of your eyes like she tells you when you started to add the final layers of the different shades of pinks. Below is the picture I took showing the layers that we created with the cream, ivory and yellow colours, the tonal layers, we slowly built this layers up using a very light pressure.

Most coloured pencil artists that I have seen and followed over the past 2 years that use hot press paper would tell you to use sharp pencils and a heavy pressure, which as you can imagine can and will cause you to have joint issues.
Laleh doesn’t use this approach, she tells you to have sharp pencils and a light pressure and slowly build the layers up.
I really like Laleh approach, it has made me want to learn more.
Here is the finished drawing with the pink tones on top.

Here are the details about this piece.
